Education Centres And Exhibitions in the Operational Area of the Bükk National Park Directorate

 

NÓGRÁD COUNTY

Ipolytarnóc Fossils Nature Conservation Area

Shark teeth, footprints of prehistoric animals, huge, petrified trees from a subtropical jungle, leaf impressions of exotic plants - the guided geological trail leads from the sea bottom to the top of the volcanoes. Visitors can follow the revival of the Prehistoric World in the 4-dimensional cinema.
The famous Ipolytarnóc Fossils Nature Reserve was awarded the European Diploma, its inner core is on the Nominees List of the World Heritage Sites.
Ipolytarnóc, the gate of the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark, welcomes visitors with new attractions from March to October.

The recent developments:

Miocene Forest where visitors can walk around trees and plant which represents the ancient flora of the Miocene epoch with life-size models of mammals lived locally 20 million years ago;

Challenging path hanged on tree foliage level in 8-10 m height;

Picnic site with playground and coffee-room

Open: in Spring and Autumn from Tuesday to Sunday daily 9:00 – 16:00; in Summer from Tuesday to Sunday daily 9:00 -17:00. Guided tours start in every hour from 9:30 to 15:30 (in summer the last tour is at 16:30)

The site is open on national holydays, too.

Baglyas-kő Vár Nature Conservation VisitorCentre in Salgótarján

200 m2 space indoor and a 3 hectares park around the volcanic Baglyas Rock, which has local geologic conservation importance. Beside the exhibition the Nógrád office of the Bükk National Park Directorate is here.

Open for visitors:

Between 1. March and 31. October from Tuesday to Sunday and on high days daily 9:00 – 16:00, in other season daily 9:00-15:00.

Hollókő Village Museum, "Landscape And People" Exhibition, Hollókő

(Address: Hollókő, 99-100 Kossuth út)

The Hollókő Protected Landscape Area was established in 1977 to preserve the traditional architecture, land-use and culture of, Hollókő village and its surroundings belted by the Cserhát Hills.

Hollókő village, stretching at the foot of the castle hill, was listed as a UNESCO "World Culture Heritage" site in 1987 for the reconstruction and preservation of the old village, and the traditional small plot vineyard farming on the surrounding hillsides.

The history of the village, the culture and the traditional life of the Palóc people is exhibited in a traditional peasant house.

Open: 1 March - 31 October, 10:00 - 18:00h; 1 November - 28 February, Saturday and Sunday, 10.00 – 16.00h. In this (winter) part of the year, additional opening hours may be agreed on at prior arrangement.

 HEVES COUNTY

West Gate Field Education And Visitor Center, "The Karst And Its Wildlife" Exhibition, Felsőtárkány

(Address: Felsőtárkány, 34/1 Ifjúságu. 34/1.)

The visitor can follow the seasons of a year in different habitats in the exhibition cases, can look at a small site of the “Öserdő” (a semi-natural beech wood) and of “Nagy-mező” (an open karst-field), and can see the karst formations of the Bükk Mountain.

A reconstructed prehistoric cave shows how the man used the caves for home.

At the reception of the exhibition further information is available about other Bükk National Park areas and recommended programmes.

“The Arboretum of Erdőtelek” Nature Conservation Area

(Address: Fő utca, 3358 Erdőtelek)

Erdőtelek  village is in the northern part of the Great Plain, northeast of Heves County. More than 1200 trees, shrubs and perennial plants can be found in the botanical garden of the Buttler Castle. The richness of the arboretum reveals the magical plant life of different continents.

Open: Weekdays 7:30 - 16:00h, Saturday and Sunday and on red-letter days 9:00 - 16:00h.

Between 15. November and 30. Januar open only for advance booking.

Millennium View Tower, Szilvásvárad

Open: 1 January – 31 December, from Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 – 17:00 (opening time is informative; in the case of bad weather it is closed).

The tower can be visited free of charge on the following days:

22 April (Earth Day), 10 May (Day of Trees and Birds), 24 May (National Parks’ Day), and 5 June (Day of Environmental Protection).

BORSOD COUNTY 

St. István Cave in Lillafüred

This cave is outstanding among the caves of the Bükk Mountains by the size and richness in dripstones. The cave is open for the public since 1931.

Open: 1. April – 30. September, 9:00 – 18:00 (last tour starts 17.00); 1 October - 31 March daily, 9:00 - 15:00 (last tour starts 14:00).

Cave tours start at every full hour. Minimum number of visitors 10 persons.

Anna Cave in Lillafüred

The cave was discovered in the beginning of the 19th century, and was opened for tourism in 1927 after the introduction of electric lighting. The 400m-long cave was formed in lime tuff by the Szinva Waterfall. The travertine-covered petrified moss curtains, pine leaves and roots on the walls and ceilings of the chambers offer a magical, unique view.

Open:  1. April – 30. September daily, 10:00-17:00 (last tour starts 16:00).

Oszla Country House, Cserépfalu

The Oszla House is located in the picturesque environment of the Hór Valley, north of Cserépfalu, at the foot of Ódorvár Hill. The forester’s house was built at the turn of the 18-19th century, and was used as a bunk-house. In the building an exhibition was opened in 1981 displaying the characteristic folk art of, and the tools used by, the local people.

Services for Cyclists – Bicycle rent and cycling tours in Bükk National Park. There is an extensive network of marked forest bicycle paths.

Felsőtárkány – National Park Visitor Centre - Repair service and bike hiring (34/1 Ifjúság u., Felsőtárkány). Available from March to October, from Wednesday to Sunday. Well-equipped MTB bicycles for children, women and men; guided tours. Contact: Visitor Centre Reception. Tel.: (36) 534-078.

Cycling maps – With recommended routes for cyclists in Bükk National Park. The different-colour designated bike route system avoids busy traffic roads, and provides access to almost all the scenic sites of the Bükk Mountain. Follow the marked routes and take care of the other hikers, please.
